Soleirolia
Common Names: Baby’s Tears, Angel’s Tears, Mind-Your-Own-Business
Full Botanical Name: Helxine soleirolii
Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to the Mediterranean regions of Italy and nearby islands, particularly Corsica and Sardinia

Overview
Soleirolia, more affectionately known as Baby’s Tears, is a charming ground-covering houseplant with tiny, rounded leaves that form a dense, cushion-like mat of greenery. Its trailing or creeping habit makes it a whimsical addition to terrariums, shelves, or even as a companion plant for larger specimens.

Growing Conditions in Native Habitat
Thrives in shady, moist areas on forest floors and rock crevices, often forming natural, lush carpets of greenery.

Care Guide
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate lower light conditions, but growth may become sparse. Avoid strong direct sunlight which may scorch the delicate leaves.
Ideal Room: Perfect for bathrooms, terrariums, kitchens, or anywhere with consistent humidity.
Feeding: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring through early autumn) with a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer.
Humidity: Loves high humidity and appreciates regular misting. Dry air can cause browning leaf tips.
Ideal Temperature: Thrives between 60–75°F (16–24°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Never allow it to completely dry out. Reduce watering in cooler months, but don’t let it fully dry.

Pet/Child Safe: Yes – non-toxic and safe for homes with pets or young children.

Soil Type: Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet well-draining potting mix. Adding some perlite can improve aeration.

Propagation: Easily propagated by division. Simply separate a clump with roots and replant in moist soil.

Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 5cm in height and can spread rapidly to cover large areas—up to 30–50cm or more in width.

Growth Rate: Fast-growing under the right humidity and moisture conditions.

Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract fungus gnats if overwatered. Ensure good airflow and avoid waterlogging.

Repotting: Repot when it outgrows its container or begins to crowd other plants in shared pots.

Pruning: Trim regularly to maintain a compact form and prevent legginess. Pruning also encourages denser growth.

Air Purification: While not a top-rated air purifier, its lush foliage still contributes positively to indoor air quality.

Folklore: Known by many whimsical names, this plant has been historically used in Victorian gardens as a symbol of quietness and retreat, often planted in peaceful, shaded areas.
