Jasminum polyanthum, commonly known as Pink Jasmine or Many-flowered Jasmine, is a vigorous, evergreen climber celebrated for its profusion of fragrant white flowers that emerge from pink buds. Its twining stems and lush foliage make it an excellent choice for adding a touch of elegance to indoor spaces or sheltered outdoor areas.
- Full Botanical Name: Jasminum polyanthum
- Common Names: Pink Jasmine, Many-flowered Jasmine
- Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to southwestern China
- Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Thrives in the understory of forests, where it receives filtered sunlight and grows in warm, humid environments with well-draining soil.
Care Guide:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, prolonged exposure may scorch the leaves. Insufficient light can reduce flowering.
- Ideal Room: Suitable for living rooms, sunrooms, or conservatories that receive ample natural light without direct sun exposure.
- Feeding: During the growing season (spring to early fall), feed every 2-3 weeks with a phosphorus-rich, water-soluble fertilizer to promote flowering. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to leggy growth.
- Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity. To increase humidity, mist the leaves regularly, place the plant near a humidifier, or set it on a tray filled with pebbles and water.
- Ideal Temperature: Maintains best growth between 60°F and 75°F (16°C to 24°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C) and avoid exposure to cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top half-inch of soil feels dry. Ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.
- Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe choice for households
- Soil Type: Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix. A combination of potting soil, perlite or sand, and peat moss or coco coir is ideal to ensure proper drainage and aeration.
- Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Take 4-5 inch cuttings from healthy stems, remove lower leaves, and plant in moist potting mix. Keep the cuttings in a warm, humid environment with indirect light until roots develop.
- Eventual Height and Spread: Can grow up to 10-20 feet (3-6 meters) tall and 5-8 feet (1.5-2.5 meters) wide, depending on support and pruning
- Growth Rate: Exhibits a fast growth rate, especially during the growing season when provided with appropriate care.
- Pests and Treatment: Watch for common pests such as aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage.
- Repotting: Repot annually at the beginning of the growing season only when the plant becomes extremely root-bound, as it blooms best when slightly pot-bound.
- Pruning: Prune after flowering to remove dead or overgrown stems and to maintain the desired shape. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and enhances flowering.
- Air Purification: Like many houseplants, Jasminum polyanthum contributes to improved indoor air quality by filtering airborne toxins.
- Folklore: Jasmine is often associated with love and purity in various cultures. Its intoxicating fragrance has made it a symbol of beauty and sensuality, often used in ceremonies and celebrations.
